Test your program

Place a test order and check points, rewards and customer displays before you launch.

Before you tell customers about your program, it’s worth placing a test order and checking that points, rewards and your customer-facing displays all work the way you expect.

Before you start

Turn EarnKit on, and add at least one customer-facing display, such as the Rewards page, so you have somewhere to see the result.

Awarding points on test orders

EarnKit normally skips orders placed in Shopify’s test mode. Every order on a development store already arrives this way, so testing on one won’t earn any points until you turn this on.

  1. In EarnKit, go to Program › Ways to Earn.
  2. Next to Purchase points, choose Advanced settings.
  3. Turn on Award points on test orders.
  4. Save.

While this is on, orders placed through a test-mode payment gateway earn real, redeemable points, the same as any other order.

Placing a test order

Place a test order using Shopify’s test mode, or use a development store, where every order already arrives in test mode. Once the order is paid, check the customer’s points balance and that any customer-facing displays you’ve added show what you expect.

What customers see

Whatever you’ve set up: points on the Rewards page, an estimate on product pages, or points on the thank-you and order-status pages. A test order behaves exactly like a real one once test-order earning is turned on, so this is a good way to see the whole customer experience before launch.

Good to know

  • Points earned from test orders are real and redeemable until you reverse them. Turning the toggle off afterwards doesn’t remove points you’ve already earned from test orders.
  • Once test-order points are outstanding, the same Advanced settings window shows a Reverse test-order points button. Reversing adds a points activity entry for each test order; nothing is edited or deleted, so both the original points and the reversal are recorded.
  • Points still in their pending period can’t be reversed until they become available.
  • Turn Award points on test orders back off once you’re done testing, so real test-mode orders don’t earn points by accident later.
