Import starting balances

Upload points or past spending from a CSV file, review it, and add starting balances.

You can give existing customers a starting points balance by uploading a CSV file. Nothing is added until you’ve reviewed the file and confirmed it.

Before you start

Decide how you want to add starting points:

Either way, check Import file format for what your file needs to contain.

Uploading a file

  1. In EarnKit, go to Customers, then select Import points.
  2. Choose Reward past purchases or Bring over existing points.
  3. Choose your file and select Preview balances.
  4. Review the preview: how many customers will get a starting balance, how many rows can’t be included, and the total points involved.
  5. Enter a Reason for this import (staff only, not shown to customers) and a Note customers will see next to their starting balance in their points history. EarnKit suggests a default note you can edit.
  6. Select Confirm and apply.

What happens after you confirm

Balances are applied one customer at a time. You can leave the page; it updates on its own while the import is in progress. When it finishes, you can download the results, which list every row and whether it was applied.

If some rows couldn’t be applied, the import still completes for the rest, and the results explain each one. If Shopify couldn’t be asked whether a customer exists, upload the same file again to retry just those rows.

Good to know

  • Nothing is added to any balance until you confirm. Previewing a file makes no changes.
  • A customer who already has points activity in EarnKit, or a balance that isn’t zero, can’t receive a starting balance this way.
  • EarnKit doesn’t email or text your customers about this. Any note you write appears next to the starting balance in their own points history in your store.
  • Every past import is listed on this page, with a link to its results.
