Pending and available points

Delay when purchase points become available, and what happens to pending points after a refund.

Last reviewed

You can delay when purchase points become available to spend, giving yourself time to handle returns before a customer redeems them.

Before you start

Go to ProgramWays to Earn, under Points delay.

Set a delay

  1. Turn on Delay when points become available.
  2. Set the Pending period: an amount and a unit (seconds, minutes, hours or days). The maximum is 60 days.
  3. Save your changes.

Consider matching the delay to your return window.

While the delay is off, new purchase points are available as soon as an order is paid.

What customers see

Points earned during the pending period are shown separately from a customer’s balance and can’t yet be used for rewards. Once the pending period ends, they become available and join the balance like any other points.

Good to know

  • A change to the pending period applies to new points only. Points already pending keep the availability date they were given when they were earned.
  • Turning the delay off doesn’t release points that are already pending; it only removes the wait for new purchase points.
  • Pending points aren’t released at the exact instant the pending period ends: EarnKit checks periodically, so an award can become available slightly after that point.
  • If an order is refunded while its points are still pending, the pending award is reduced to match, or canceled if nothing eligible remains. See Refunds, cancellations and order edits.
  • If a paid order is edited to remove merchandise while its points are still pending, the pending award is reduced the same way, even though the same edit has no effect once points are already available.
