Points on test orders

Choose whether test orders award points, and reverse points already awarded on them.

Shopify’s test mode is store-wide, so by default an order placed through a test-mode payment gateway earns no points. You can turn this on temporarily to check your program before launch.

Before you start

Go to Program › Ways to Earn, then open Advanced settings under Purchase points.

Turn on points for test orders

  1. Turn on Award points on test orders.
  2. Save your changes.

While this is on, orders placed through a test-mode payment gateway earn real, redeemable points, exactly as a real order would.

Reverse test-order points

If you’ve awarded points on test orders and want to remove them before launch:

  1. Open Advanced settings under Purchase points.
  2. If points from test orders are outstanding, you’ll see a banner naming how many points, across how many customer accounts and orders.
  3. Select Reverse test-order points to remove points awarded on test orders.

Nothing is edited or deleted: points activity keeps both the original awards and the reversals. Turning the test-order toggle off on its own doesn’t remove points already awarded; you need to use the reversal button.

Points still in their pending period from test orders can’t be reversed until they mature. Once they do, the same banner and reversal button will cover them.

Good to know

  • The points earned on test orders while this is on are real and redeemable, exactly like points from a genuine order. Turning this on for a demo store carries that risk.
  • Test-order earning follows the same eligible spending rules as any other order.
