Switch from another loyalty app
Move customers’ balances from another loyalty app, and what does not move with them.
Last reviewed
If you’re moving from another loyalty app, you can bring your customers’ current points balances into EarnKit as starting balances.
Before you start
You’ll need an export from your previous loyalty app of each member’s current available points balance, and their Shopify Customer ID. See Import file format for exactly what the file needs.
What to export
From your previous app’s member or customer export, get each member’s current available points balance, not their lifetime points earned. Save the file as UTF-8 CSV, keeping every digit of any identifier, and add the Shopify Customer ID for each row before uploading.
If your previous provider’s export only has an email column, export your customers from Shopify, match each email address to its Shopify Customer ID in a spreadsheet, and add that ID to your points file.
Planning the switch
- Prepare your offer. Check EarnKit’s rewards and what the transferred points can get. Keep backup exports and note down any balances, codes or expiration issues you’ll need to resolve separately.
- Choose the transfer time. Use a single, deliberate point-in-time balance snapshot. Stop the old program’s balance-changing activity for that final export, or have a clear plan for reconciling any changes that happen after it. Turning off a visible widget doesn’t by itself stop earning or redemption in the old app.
- Import and check the final balances. Split the snapshot into files if needed, preview each one, add the points, and check the results.
- Finish the switch. Review any remaining exceptions and customer access, then choose when to turn on EarnKit’s own earning. Check your previous provider’s automations and any outstanding codes separately, and keep your records before uninstalling anything.
If points change in your previous program after you took your export, those changes won’t be included automatically.
What does, and doesn’t, come across
A starting-balance import brings over each customer’s current available points, as a starting balance. It doesn’t recreate everything else your previous program tracked. In particular, it does not bring over:
- Previous earning and redemption history
- Existing discount and reward codes issued by the other app
- Pending points
- VIP tiers or tier progress
- Birthdays, marketing preferences, or bonus-claim history
- Original expiry dates
- Customer-facing page placements
Review existing discount codes and ongoing promotions in Shopify, and set up where customers see their EarnKit rewards. VIP tiers and tier progress cannot be recreated in EarnKit.
Good to know
- This import accepts zero or positive whole-point balances only. Handle negative balances or pending points from your previous program separately, rather than rounding them to zero or leaving them out.
- EarnKit has no VIP tiers of its own; tier progress from another program can’t be represented here.
