How referrals work

How referral links work, what each person receives, and when the referring customer earns points.

Last reviewed

Customers share a personal referral link from their Rewards page. Their friend gets a first-order discount, and the customer who shared earns points when that order qualifies.

How a referral works

  1. Your customer shares. They copy their referral link from their Rewards page and share it however they prefer.
  2. Their friend shops. The friend follows the link to your store and uses the first-order discount on an eligible purchase.
  3. You thank them with points. When the first paid order meets your referral rules and any waiting period has passed, the customer who shared receives their points.

What each person receives

You choose both parts of the offer. For example:

Who Receives When
Their friend $5 off a first eligible order At checkout
Your customer 250 points After the friend’s first paid order qualifies

You can set a minimum qualifying purchase for the referral points. The friend’s discount may have its own conditions, so review both parts of the offer.

When points are awarded

A shared link, a visit, or an unpaid order is not enough to earn referral points. The friend’s first paid order must meet the referral requirements, and any waiting period must have passed.

Referral points go into the same balance as purchase points. What customers can get with them depends on the rewards you offer, and they are not a cash payment.

If a refund means an order no longer qualifies, the referral outcome and any points reversal can be reviewed in the referral history.

Your customers’ contacts

Customers copy their link and share it themselves. They do not upload a contact list or enter a friend’s contact details into EarnKit.
