Permissions

The Shopify permissions and customer data access EarnKit asks for, and why.

Last reviewed

When you install EarnKit, Shopify asks you to approve a set of permissions. Here’s what each one is for.

Orders

EarnKit reads your orders to award points on eligible purchases and to reverse points correctly when an order is refunded.

Customers

EarnKit reads and writes customer records to publish each customer’s points balance to Shopify, so it stays on their record and travels with the customer profile. This also lets EarnKit keep a customer’s points correct when Shopify merges two of their customer profiles into one.

Discounts

EarnKit reads and creates discount codes to issue reward codes and referral discounts, and to check a discount code’s status when needed.

What EarnKit can see about a customer

EarnKit does not store customer names, email addresses, phone numbers or postal addresses. At the protected-data level EarnKit ships with, it does not fetch those fields to show in your admin. It works with customer identifiers, points, orders and program settings only. See Privacy and customer data for what EarnKit stores.

If a permission is missing

If your store hasn’t granted a permission EarnKit needs, EarnKit shows a notice asking you to reinstall the app from the Apps section of your Shopify admin. Reinstalling is how Shopify lets you grant the missing permission.

Good to know

  • These permissions apply to your whole store; there’s no way to grant a subset.
  • EarnKit only uses these permissions for the purposes described above.
